"Of the many-hooded Nagas I am Ananta, and among the aquatics I am the demigod Varuna. Of departed ancestors I am Aryama, and among the dispensers of law I am Yama, the lord of death."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The Lord maps His presence among the regulators of the universe. He states: Among the multi-hooded divine serpents (nāgānāṃ), I am Ananta (the infinite serpent bed of Vishnu). Among all aquatic beings and water deities (yādasām), I am Varuna, the lord of the oceans. Among the departed ancestors (pitṝṇām), I am the chief ancestor, Aryama. And among the subduers, regulators, and dispensers of ultimate law (saṃyamatām), I am Yama, the lord of death and cosmic justice.
