Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna lists supreme examples of power and nobility. He says: Among all horses (aśvānāṃ), know Me to be the legendary Uccaiḥśrava (uccaiḥśravasam viddhi mām). This divine horse was manifested and born from the great churning of the cosmic ocean for the nectar of immortality (amṛtodbhavam). Similarly, among the great lordly elephants (gajendrāṇāṃ), I am Airavata (Indra's multi-trunked mount). And finally, among human beings (narāṇāṃ ca), I am the sovereign monarch or king (narādhipam).
