Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna continues to reveal His presence in the ultimate expressions of various categories. He tells Arjuna (pārtha): Among all priests and spiritual preceptors (purodhasāṃ), know Me to be the absolute chief (mukhyaṃ māṃ viddhi), Brihaspati, the spiritual master of the demigods. Among military generals and commanders (senānīnām), I am Skanda (Kartikeya), the invincible god of war. And among all bodies of water or lakes (sarasām), I am the vast, boundless ocean (asmi sāgaraḥ).
