Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The list of absolute excellences continues. Krishna says: Among the eleven fierce Rudras (rudrāṇāṃ), I am Lord Shankara/Shiva (śaṅkaraś cāsmi). Among the nocturnal, power-seeking beings like Yakshas and Rakshasas (yakṣa-rakṣasām), I am Kuvera, the lord of wealth and treasure (vitteśo). Among the eight elemental Vasus (vasūnāṃ), I am Agni, the purifying fire (pāvakaś cāsmi). And among all the towering, peaked mountains in the cosmos (śikhariṇām), I am the golden Mount Meru (meruḥ aham).
