Aligning Consciousness

Ch 10Verse 22
Adhyāya 10 Shloka 22

वेदानां सामवेदोऽस्मि देवानामस्मि वासवः | इन्द्रियाणां मनश्चास्मि भूतानामस्मि चेतना || २२ ||

vedānāṃ sāma-vedo 'smi devānām asmi vāsavaḥ | indriyāṇāṃ manaś cāsmi bhūtānām asmi cetanā || 22 ||

"Of the Vedas I am the Sama Veda; of the demigods I am Indra, the king of heaven; of the senses I am the mind; and in living beings I am the living force [consciousness]."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Continuing the majestic categorizations, Krishna declares: Among the four primary Vedas (vedānāṃ), I am the deeply musical and devotional Sama Veda (sāma-vedo 'smi). Among all the celestial demigods (devānām), I am their king, Indra, also known as Vasava (asmi vāsavaḥ). Among all the sensory organs of the body (indriyāṇāṃ), I am the central, integrating mind (manaś cāsmi). And within all living, biological entities (bhūtānām), I am the very force of consciousness itself (asmi cetanā).
