Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna begins listing specific categories of cosmic manifestation and identifying Himself as the pinnacle of each. He says: Among the twelve celestial Adityas (ādityānām), I am the principal deity Vishnu (ahaṃ viṣṇur). Among all sources of light and luminaries (jyotiṣāṃ), I am the intensely radiant, many-rayed sun (ravir aṃśumān). Among the wind and storm gods known as the Maruts (marutām), I am their leader Marici (marīcir asmi). And among the stars and celestial bodies of the night sky (nakṣatrāṇām), I am the moon (ahaṃ śaśī).
