Ch 1Verse 46
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 46

यदि मामप्रतीकारमशस्त्रं शस्त्रपाणय: | धार्तराष्ट्रा रणे हन्युस्तन्मे क्षेमतरं भवेत् || ४६ ||

yadi mām apratīkāram aśastraṃ śastra-pāṇayaḥ | dhārtarāṣṭrā raṇe hanyus tan me kṣemataraṃ bhavet || 46 ||

"It would be better for me if the sons of Dhritarashtra, weapons in hand, were to kill me unarmed and unresisting on the battlefield."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna reaches the final, extreme conclusion of his mental spiral. He states that the absolute best possible outcome (kṣemataraṃ) is for him to drop his weapons, stand entirely unresisting (apratīkāram), and allow the armed Kauravas to slaughter him. He believes that being murdered in cold blood is morally superior to fighting back.
