sañjaya uvāca | evam uktvārjunaḥ saṅkhye rathopastha upāviśat | visṛjya sa-śaraṃ cāpaṃ śoka-saṃvigna-mānasaḥ || 47 ||

"Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus on the battlefield, Arjuna cast aside his bow and arrows and sank down on the seat of the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with grief."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The chapter concludes with Sanjaya's narration. The descent is complete. Arjuna goes from raising his bow (Verse 20) to physically casting it aside (visṛjya sa-śaraṃ cāpaṃ). He collapses onto the seat of the chariot (rathopastha upāviśat). The final word used to describe his state is 'śoka-saṃvigna-mānasaḥ'—a mind agitated and overwhelmed by sorrow. The warrior has broken.
