Ch 1Verse 45
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 45

अहो बत महत्पापं कर्तुं व्यवसिता वयम् | यद्राज्यसुखलोभेन हन्तुं स्वजनमुद्यता: || ४५ ||

aho bata mahat pāpaṃ kartuṃ vyavasitā vayam | yad rājya-sukha-lobhena hantuṃ sva-janam udyatāḥ || 45 ||

"Alas, how strange it is that we are prepared to commit a great sin! Driven by the desire to enjoy royal happiness, we are intent on killing our own kinsmen."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna expresses profound shock at his own previous readiness to fight. 'Aho bata' translates to 'Alas, how strange/terrible!' He looks at himself and his brothers and concludes that they must be driven by 'lobha' (greed) for 'rājya-sukha' (royal happiness). He equates his side's motives with the exact same greed that drives the Kauravas.
