Ch 1Verse 44
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 44

उत्सन्नकुलधर्माणां मनुष्याणां जनार्दन | नरके नियतं वासो भवतीत्यनुशुश्रुम || ४४ ||

utsanna-kula-dharmāṇāṃ manuṣyāṇāṃ janārdana | narake niyataṃ vāso bhavatīty anuśuśruma || 44 ||

"O Janardana, I have heard from the learned that those who destroy family traditions dwell always in hell."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna cites his source. He doesn't say 'I know this to be true'; he says 'anuśuśruma' (we have heard it). He is relying on hearsay, societal conditioning, and the dogma passed down by elders to finalize his argument. He concludes that hell (narake) is the guaranteed (niyataṃ) destination for those who participate in this destruction.
