Ch 1Verse 42
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 42

सङ्करो नरकायैव कुलघ्नानां कुलस्य च | पतन्ति पितरो ह्येषां लुप्तपिण्डोदकक्रिया: || ४२ ||

saṅkaro narakāyaiva kula-ghnānāṃ kulasya ca | patanti pitaro hy eṣāṃ lupta-piṇḍodaka-kriyāḥ || 42 ||

"An increase of unwanted population surely causes hell both for the family and for those who destroy the family. The ancestors of such corrupt families fall, deprived of the offerings of food and water."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna continues his dark prophecy. He believes that the disruption of the family lineage will result in hell (narakāya) for everyone involved. He points to the Vedic ritual of Śrāddha—the offering of rice balls (piṇḍa) and water (udaka) to ancestors. Without pure-blooded descendants to perform these specific rituals accurately, the ancestors will 'fall' from their heavenly realms.
