Ch 1Verse 41
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 41

अधर्माभिभवात्कृष्ण प्रदुष्यन्ति कुलस्त्रिय: | स्त्रीषु दुष्टासु वार्ष्णेय जायते वर्णसङ्कर: || ४१ ||

adharmābhibhavāt kṛṣṇa praduṣyanti kula-striyaḥ | strīṣu duṣṭāsu vārṣṇeya jāyate varṇa-saṅkaraḥ || 41 ||

"O Krishna, when irreligion (Adharma) prevails, the women of the family become corrupt, and from the corruption of women, O descendent of Vrishni, comes the unwanted intermingling of castes (varṇa-saṅkara)."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna is tracing the domino effect of the catastrophic future he imagined in Verse 40. He argues that the loss of the elders will lead to a collapse of moral guidance. Without this structure, the vulnerable members of society (specifically women, in the context of ancient social structures) will be led astray, resulting in the breakdown of traditional social boundaries and the intermingling of distinct classes (Varnas).
