Ch 1Verse 40
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 40

कुलक्षये प्रणश्यन्ति कुलधर्मा: सनातना: | धर्मे नष्टे कुलं कृत्स्नमधर्मोऽभिभवत्युत || ४० ||

kula-kṣaye praṇaśyanti kula-dharmāḥ sanātanāḥ | dharme naṣṭe kulaṃ kṛtsnam adharmo 'bhibhavaty uta || 40 ||

"With the destruction of the family, the eternal family traditions are destroyed, and with the ruin of these traditions, irreligion (Adharma) overcomes the entire family."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna now launches into a detailed sociological prediction. He argues that war kills the elders and the men. Without the elders, the 'Kula-Dharma' (eternal family traditions, rituals, and moral codes) will vanish. When the traditions die, the surviving members of the family (women and children) will be entirely overcome by Adharma (lawlessness and irreligion).
