Ch 1Verse 39
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 39

कथं न ज्ञेयमस्माभि: पापादस्मान्निवर्तितुम् | कुलक्षयकृतं दोषं प्रपश्यद्भिर्जनार्दन || ३९ ||

kathaṃ na jñeyam asmābhiḥ pāpād asmān nivartitum | kula-kṣaya-kṛtaṃ doṣaṃ prapaśyadbhir janārdana || 39 ||

"Why should we, who can clearly see the evil in the destruction of the family, not learn to turn away from this sin, O Janardana?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna completes his thought from Verse 38. His argument is: 'They are blind, but we are not. We can clearly see (prapaśyadbhiḥ) the disaster that will come from destroying the lineage. Since we have the superior knowledge (jñeyam), it is our responsibility to turn away from this sin (pāpād nivartitum).' He is proposing unilateral disarmament.
