Ch 1Verse 38
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 38

यद्यप्येते न पश्यन्ति लोभोपहतचेतस: | कुलक्षयकृतं दोषं मित्रद्रोहे च पातकम् || ३८ ||

yady apy ete na paśyanti lobhopahata-cetasaḥ | kula-kṣaya-kṛtaṃ doṣaṃ mitra-drohe ca pātakam || 38 ||

"Even if these people, whose minds are overpowered by greed, see no wrong in destroying the family and no crime in the treachery of friends..."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This verse is a continuous thought that concludes in Verse 39. Arjuna admits that the Kauravas are entirely to blame. He diagnoses them as 'lobhopahata-cetasaḥ' (minds overpowered/destroyed by greed). Because of this greed, they are blind to the two great sins they are committing: the destruction of the family (kula-kṣaya) and treachery toward friends (mitra-droha).
