Adhyāya 1 Shloka 37

तस्मान्नार्हा वयं हन्तुं धार्तराष्ट्रान्स्वबान्धवान् | स्वजनं हि कथं हत्वा सुखिन: स्याम माधव || ३७ ||

tasmān nārhā vayaṃ hantuṃ dhārtarāṣṭrān sva-bāndhavān | sva-janaṃ hi kathaṃ hatvā sukhinaḥ syāma mādhava || 37 ||

"Therefore, it is not proper for us to kill the sons of Dhritarashtra and our relatives. For how can we be happy by killing our own kinsmen, O Madhava?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna delivers his 'final verdict.' Having presented his emotional arguments, he says 'tasmāt' (therefore), issuing a ruling that it is 'not proper' (na arhāḥ) to fight. He addresses Krishna as Madhava (Husband of the Goddess of Fortune), subtly asking how any 'fortune' or 'happiness' (sukhinaḥ) can come from shedding familial blood.
