Ch 1Verse 36
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 36

निहत्य धार्तराष्ट्रान्न: का प्रीतिः स्याज्जनार्दन | पापमेवाश्रयेदस्मान्हत्वैतानाततायिन: || ३६ ||

nihatya dhārtarāṣṭrān naḥ kā prītiḥ syāj janārdana | pāpam evāśrayed asmān hatvaitān ātatāyinaḥ || 36 ||

"O Janardana (Krishna), what joy can we derive from killing the sons of Dhritarashtra? Sin alone will overcome us if we slay such aggressors."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna brings up the concept of 'Ātatāyinaḥ' (aggressors). According to Vedic law (Vasistha Dharma Sutra), there are six types of aggressors: poisoners, arsonists, those who attack with deadly weapons, plunderers, thieves of land, and kidnappers of women. The Kauravas committed all six crimes against the Pandavas. The law states that killing an Ātatāyin incurs no sin. Yet, Arjuna explicitly contradicts the law, stating that 'sin alone will overcome us.'
