Adhyāya 1 Shloka 34

आचार्याः पितरः पुत्रास्तथैव च पितामहाः | मातुलाः श्वशुराः पौत्राः श्यालाः सम्बन्धिनस्तथा || ३४ ||

ācāryāḥ pitaraḥ putrās tathaiva ca pitāmahāḥ | mātulāḥ śvaśurāḥ pautrāḥ śyālāḥ sambandhinas tathā || 34 ||

"Teachers, fathers, sons, as well as grandfathers, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law, and other relatives."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna explicitly lists the people he is refusing to kill. It is a comprehensive inventory of his social and biological world. He names the teachers (Drona, Kripa), fathers/uncles (Shalya, Shakuni), grandfathers (Bhishma, Somadatta), and extends down to sons, grandsons, and in-laws. This verse emphasizes the sheer scale of the civil war—there is virtually no degree of separation between the two armies.
