Ch 1Verse 33
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 33

येषामर्थे काङ्क्षितं नो राज्यं भोगाः सुखानि च | त इमेऽवस्थिता युद्धे प्राणांस्त्यक्त्वा धनानि च || ३३ ||

yeṣām arthe kāṅkṣitaṃ no rājyaṃ bhogāḥ sukhāni ca | ta ime 'vasthitā yuddhe prāṇāṃs tyaktvā dhanāni ca || 33 ||

"Those for whose sake we desire kingdom, enjoyments, and pleasures are arrayed here in battle, having staked their lives and wealth."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna explains the logic behind his sudden depression (from Verse 32). He argues that the entire purpose of fighting for a kingdom and wealth is to enjoy it with one's family and loved ones. Since the very people he wants to share the victory with are the ones he has to kill, the victory itself becomes entirely meaningless. They are standing there ready to throw away their lives (prāṇāṃs tyaktvā).
