Ch 1Verse 32
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 32

न काङ्क्षे विजयं कृष्ण न च राज्यं सुखानि च | किं नो राज्येन गोविन्द किं भोगैर्जीवितेन वा || ३२ ||

na kāṅkṣe vijayaṃ kṛṣṇa na ca rājyaṃ sukhāni ca | kiṃ no rājyena govinda kiṃ bhogair jīvitena vā || 32 ||

"I do not desire victory, O Krishna, nor kingdom, nor pleasures. Of what use to us is a kingdom, O Govinda, or pleasures, or even life itself?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna declares a sudden and complete renunciation of the world. He claims he no longer wants the victory they have spent 13 years preparing for. He renounces the kingdom (rājyaṃ), sensory pleasures (bhogair), and dramatically questions the value of life itself (jīvitena vā). He uses two names for Krishna here: Krishna (the all-attractive) and Govinda (the protector of cows/senses).
