Ch 1Verse 31
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 31

निमित्तानि च पश्यामि विपरीतानि केशव | न च श्रेयोऽनुपश्यामि हत्वा स्वजनमाहवे || ३१ ||

nimittāni ca paśyāmi viparītāni keśava | na ca śreyo 'nupaśyāmi hatvā sva-janam āhave || 31 ||

"I see adverse omens, O Keshava (Krishna). Nor do I foresee any good in killing my own kinsmen in battle."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna’s physical panic now transforms into mental rationalization. He starts pointing to external 'omens' (nimittāni)—perhaps birds flying in the wrong direction, or his own bodily tremors—as signs that the war is doomed. He then states his conclusion: no ultimate good (śreyas) can come from killing his own people (sva-janam).
