Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Continuing his command to Krishna, Arjuna explains why he wants to be placed in the center. He wants to carefully inspect (nirīkṣe) the enemy ranks. He notes that they are 'eager for battle' (yoddhu-kāmān). He wants to assess exactly who he is up against in this massive undertaking (raṇa-samudyame).
