"At that time, seeing the sons of Dhritarashtra arrayed and the discharge of weapons about to begin, Arjuna (the son of Pandu), whose flag bore the emblem of Hanuman, took up his bow."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The armies are face-to-face. The 'shattering' sound of the conches has passed, and the first arrows are about to fly. Arjuna, the master archer, raises his bow, Gāṇḍīva, ready to begin the slaughter. He is at the peak of his martial confidence. There is no hint of dejection yet; he is the 'professional' ready to do his job.
