Ch 1Verse 15
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 15

पाञ्चजन्यं हृषीकेशो देवदत्तं धनञ्जयः | पौण्ड्रं दध्मौ महाशङ्खं भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः || १५ ||

pāñcajanyaṃ hṛṣīkeśo devadattaṃ dhanañjayaḥ | pauṇḍraṃ dadhmau mahā-śaṅkhaṃ bhīma-karmā vṛkodaraḥ || 15 ||

"Hṛṣīkeśa (Krishna) blew his conch, Pāñcajanya; Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) blew his, Devadatta; and Vṛkodara (Bhima), the doer of Herculean tasks, blew his mighty conch, Pauṇḍra."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

In the immediate context, the Pandava leaders are announcing their presence. Each conch has a history: Pāñcajanya was taken by Krishna from a demon; Devadatta was gifted to Arjuna by Indra or Varuna. By naming these specific instruments, the text highlights the legendary status and preparedness of the Pandava heroes, contrasting their deliberate, named actions with the anonymous noise of the Kaurava ranks.
