Adhyāya 1 Shloka 13

ततः शङ्खाश्च भेर्यश्च पणवानकगोमुखाः | सहसैवाभ्यहन्यन्त स शब्दस्तुमुलोऽभवत् || १३ ||

tataḥ śaṅkhāś ca bheryaś ca paṇavānaka-gomukhāḥ | sahasaitābhyahanyanta sa śabdas tumulo ’bhavat || 13 ||

"Then, quite suddenly, conches, kettledrums, bugles, trumpets, and horns were all sounded together. The resulting tumultuous uproar was deafening."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Following Bhishma’s lead, the entire Kaurava army—millions of men—breaks into a choreographed display of aggression. Thousands of instruments are sounded simultaneously. Historically, this was a psychological warfare tactic intended to strike terror into the hearts of the enemy. It depicts the Kauravas at the peak of their material confidence, attempting to overwhelm the Pandavas with a sensory 'shock and awe' campaign.
