Ch 1Verse 12
Adhyāya 1 Shloka 12

तस्य सञ्जनयन् हर्षं कुरुवृद्धः पितामहः | सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः शङ्खं दध्मौ प्रतापवान् || १२ ||

tasya sañjanayan harṣaṃ kuru-vṛddhaḥ pitāmahaḥ | siṃha-nādaṃ vinadyoccaiḥ śaṅkhaṃ dadhmau pratāpavān || 12 ||

"Then, the valiant Grandfather Bhishma, the oldest of the Kuru dynasty, blew his conch shell loudly, making a sound like the roar of a lion, giving joy to Duryodhana."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Bhishma Pitamaha, the Commander-in-Chief, realizes that Duryodhana is paralyzed by fear and is over-talking to hide his insecurity. To stop the chatter and signal the official start of the battle, Bhishma blows his divine conch. This 'lion's roar' is a signal to the millions gathered that the time for words has ended. It provides Duryodhana with the emotional 'boost' he was looking for, momentarily validating his ego.
