Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Chapter 9 reaches its grand, majestic conclusion with the ultimate formula for perfection. Krishna gives four direct instructions: Always fix your mind on Me (man-manā bhava), become My loving devotee (mad-bhakto), worship and sacrifice for Me (mad-yājī), and physically/mentally bow down and offer respects to Me (māṃ namaskuru). By uniting the soul in this way (yuktvaivam ātmānaṃ) and making Me your supreme goal and refuge (mat-parāyaṇaḥ), you will absolutely, without a doubt, come directly to Me (mām evaiṣyasi).
