arjuna uvāca | kiṃ tad brahma kim adhyātmaṃ kiṃ karma puruṣottama | adhibhūtaṃ ca kiṃ proktam adhidaivaṃ kim ucyate || 1 ||

"Arjuna inquired: O my Lord, O Supreme Person, what is Brahman? What is the self? What are fruitive activities? What is this material manifestation? And what are the demigods? Please explain this to me."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Arjuna immediately questions the dense terminology Krishna introduced at the end of Chapter 7. He asks a rapid-fire sequence of exact questions: O Supreme Person (puruṣottama), what exactly is that Brahman (kiṃ tad brahma)? What is the nature of the self or Adhyātma (kim adhyātmaṃ)? What constitutes action or Karma (kiṃ karma)? Furthermore, what is said to be the material manifestation or Adhibhūta (adhibhūtaṃ ca kiṃ proktam), and what is called the cosmic/divine administration or Adhidaiva (adhidaivaṃ kim ucyate)?
