Ch 7Verse 5
Adhyāya 7 Shloka 5

अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् | जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत् || ५ ||

apareyam itas tv anyāṃ prakṛtiṃ viddhi me parām | jīva-bhūtāṃ mahā-bāho yayedaṃ dhāryate jagat || 5 ||

"Besides these, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is another, superior energy of Mine, which comprises the living entities who are exploiting the resources of this material, inferior nature."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Having mapped the material machine in Verse 4, Krishna introduces the Ghost in the Machine. He states: This eightfold material nature is My lower, inferior energy (aparā iyam). But besides and beyond this (itas tv anyāṃ), you must know and understand (viddhi) My other, superior, and higher energy (prakṛtiṃ me parām). What is it? It is the living entities themselves, the conscious souls (jīva-bhūtāṃ), O mighty-armed one (mahā-bāho). It is exactly by this higher conscious energy that this entire material universe is sustained, utilized, and upheld (yayā idaṃ dhāryate jagat).
