Ch 7Verse 3
Adhyāya 7 Shloka 3

मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु कश्चिद्यतति सिद्धये | यततामपि सिद्धानां कश्चिन्मां वेत्ति तत्त्वत: || ३ ||

manuṣyāṇāṃ sahasreṣu kaścid yatati siddhaye | yatatām api siddhānāṃ kaścin māṃ vetti tattvataḥ || 3 ||

"Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna delivers a sobering, mathematical reality check about the rarity of ultimate success. He says: Out of thousands and thousands of human beings (manuṣyāṇāṃ sahasreṣu), perhaps only a single one endeavors and strives for true spiritual perfection (kaścid yatati siddhaye). And even among those few who do strive and actually achieve a level of perfection (yatatām api siddhānāṃ), hardly a single one (kaścin) truly knows Me in My absolute, essential reality (māṃ vetti tattvataḥ).
