Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Chapter 5 concludes with one of the most famous verses in the Gita, widely known as the 'Peace Formula.' Krishna outlines three specific truths that must be realized to attain ultimate tranquility. One must know Me (jñātvā māṃ) as: 1. The ultimate enjoyer and beneficiary of all sacrifices and austerities (bhoktāraṃ yajña-tapasāṃ). 2. The Supreme Lord and controller of all planets, realms, and deities (sarva-loka-maheśvaram). 3. The intimate friend, well-wisher, and benefactor of all living beings (suhṛdaṃ sarva-bhūtānāṃ). A person who deeply understands and internalizes these three facts attains absolute, unshakeable peace (śāntim ṛcchati).
