Adhyāya 4 Shloka 30

अपरे नियताहारा: प्राणान्प्राणेषु जुह्वति | सर्वेऽप्येते यज्ञविदो यज्ञक्षपितकल्मषा: || ३० ||

apare niyatāhārāḥ prāṇān prāṇeṣu juhvati | sarve 'py ete yajña-vido yajña-kṣapita-kalmaṣāḥ || 30 ||

"Others, restricting their eating, offer the outgoing breath into itself as a sacrifice. All these performers who know the meaning of sacrifice become cleansed of sinful reactions."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna concludes his list of specific sacrifices by introducing the discipline of diet. Some seekers strictly regulate and restrict their food intake (apare niyatāhārāḥ), thereby sacrificing their life energies into life energies (prāṇān prāṇeṣu juhvati). Having completed the menu of options, Krishna makes a sweeping, universal guarantee: All of these individuals (sarve 'py ete), because they truly know the meaning and execution of sacrifice (yajña-vido), have all their sins, impurities, and karmic reactions completely destroyed by that sacrifice (yajña-kṣapita-kalmaṣāḥ).
