अपाने जुह्वति प्राणं प्राणेऽपानं तथापरे | प्राणापानगती रुद्ध्वा प्राणायामपरायणा: || २९ ||

apāne juhvati prāṇaṃ prāṇe 'pānaṃ tathāpare | prāṇāpāna-gatī ruddhvā prāṇāyāma-parāyaṇāḥ || 29 ||

"Still others, who are inclined to the process of breath control to remain in trance, practice by offering the movement of the outgoing breath into the incoming, and the incoming breath into the outgoing, and thus at last remain in trance, stopping all breathing."

The Direct Meaning

Krishna explicitly details the ancient, mechanical science of Pranayama (breath control). He describes specific groups of practitioners (tathāpare prāṇāyāma-parāyaṇāḥ). They sacrifice the outgoing breath (prāṇaṃ) into the incoming breath (apāne juhvati). Then, they sacrifice the incoming breath (apānaṃ) into the outgoing breath (prāṇe). Finally, by arresting the movement of both the incoming and outgoing breaths altogether (prāṇāpāna-gatī ruddhvā), they achieve a state of absolute physiological and mental suspension (trance/Kumbhaka).
