Ch 3Verse 43
Adhyāya 3 Shloka 43

एवं बुद्धे: परं बुद्ध्वा संस्तभ्यात्मानमात्मना | जहि शत्रुं महाबाहो कामरूपं दुरासदम् || ४३ ||

evaṃ buddheḥ paraṃ buddhvā saṃstabhya ātmānam ātmanā | jahi śatruṃ mahā-bāho kāma-rūpaṃ durāsadam || 43 ||

"Thus knowing oneself to be transcendental to the material senses, mind and intelligence, O mighty-armed Arjuna, one should steady the mind by deliberate spiritual intelligence and thus conquer this insatiable enemy known as lust."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is the grand, thundering conclusion to Chapter 3. Krishna brings all his tactical advice into one final strike. 'Evaṃ' (Thus), having realized that the true Self is completely superior to and distinct from the material intellect (buddheḥ paraṃ buddhvā), you must steady and support the lower self [the mind] by the higher Self (saṃstabhya ātmānam ātmanā). Having established this unbreakable internal fortress, O mighty-armed one (mahā-bāho), strike down and slay (jahi) this terrifying, formidable enemy (śatruṃ durāsadam) which takes the form of lust (kāma-rūpaṃ).
