"One whose mind is unagitated by distress, who is without craving for happiness, and who is free from attachment, fear and anger, is called a sage of steady mind."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna continues to answer 'how the sage sits/reacts.' He states that in the face of suffering or distress (duḥkheṣu), their mind is unagitated (anudvigna-manāḥ). In the presence of happiness or pleasure (sukheṣu), they are free from craving or longing for more (vigata-spṛhaḥ). Finally, Krishna lists the 'toxic triad' that the sage has entirely eliminated: they are free from attachment (rāga), fear (bhaya), and anger (krodha). Such a person is a 'Muni' (a silent, thoughtful sage) with steady wisdom (sthita-dhīḥ).
