Ch 2Verse 28
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 28

अव्यक्तादीनि भूतानि व्यक्तमध्यानि भारत | अव्यक्तनिधनान्येव तत्र का परिदेवना || २८ ||

avyaktādīni bhūtāni vyakta-madhyāni bhārata | avyakta-nidhanāny eva tatra kā paridevanā || 28 ||

"All created beings are unmanifest in their beginning, manifest in their interim state, and unmanifest again when annihilated. So what need is there for lamentation?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna offers a sweeping, panoramic view of existence. He states that all beings (bhūtāni) have a specific trajectory. Before birth, they are unmanifest/invisible (avyaktādīni). In the middle—during their lifespan—they become manifest/visible (vyakta-madhyāni). After death, they return to being unmanifest/invisible (avyakta-nidhanāny). Since 'manifestation' is just a brief, temporary flash sandwiched between two eternities of 'unmanifestation,' why lament (kā paridevanā)?
