Ch 2Verse 26
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 26

अथ चैनं नित्यजातं नित्यं वा मन्यसे मृतम् | तथापि त्वं महाबाहो नैवं शोचितुमर्हसि || २६ ||

atha cainaṃ nitya-jātaṃ nityaṃ vā manyase mṛtam | tathāpi tvaṃ mahā-bāho naivaṃ śocitum arhasi || 26 ||

"If, however, you think that the soul is perpetually born and always dies, still you have no reason to lament, O mighty-armed."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is a brilliant rhetorical pivot. Krishna says, 'Atha' (Now, if however...). He drops the high metaphysics of the eternal soul. He steps into the shoes of a pure materialist (Lokāyata or Chārvāka philosophy). He says, 'Even if you assume the self is just the body—constantly born (nitya-jātaṃ) and constantly dying (nityaṃ mṛtam)—your grief is STILL illogical, O mighty-armed Arjuna.'
