Ch 2Verse 22
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 22

वासांसि जीर्णानि यथा विहाय नवानि गृह्णाति नरोऽपराणि | तथा शरीराणि विहाय जीर्णा न्यन्यानि संयाति नवानि देही || २२ ||

vāsāṃsi jīrṇāni yathā vihāya navāni gṛhṇāti naro 'parāṇi | tathā śarīrāṇi vihāya jīrṇān yanyāni saṃyāti navāni dehī || 22 ||

"As a person puts on new garments, giving up old ones, the soul similarly accepts new material bodies, giving up the old and useless ones."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is perhaps the most famous metaphor in the Bhagavad Gita. Krishna compares death to changing clothes. Just as a person throws away worn-out, torn clothes (vāsāṃsi jīrṇāni) and happily puts on new ones (navāni), the soul (dehī) discards old, broken, or useless bodies to enter into new ones. The transition is mundane, natural, and necessary.
