Ch 2Verse 21
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 21

वेदाविनाशिनं नित्यं य एनमजमव्ययम् | कथं स पुरुषः पार्थ कं घातयति हन्ति कम् || २१ ||

vedāvināśinaṃ nityaṃ ya enam ajam avyayam | kathaṃ sa puruṣaḥ pārtha kaṃ ghātayati hanti kam || 21 ||

"O Partha, how can a person who knows that the soul is indestructible, eternal, unborn and immutable kill anyone or cause anyone to kill?"

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna challenges Arjuna's logic by asking a rhetorical question. If a person truly knows (veda) that the soul is indestructible (avināśinaṃ) and immutable (avyayam), how can that person be a 'killer' (hanti) or cause someone else to be killed (ghātayati)? Since the soul cannot be killed, the very concept of 'murdering the soul' is a logical impossibility.
