Ch 2Verse 19
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 19

"He who thinks that the living entity is the slayer and he who thinks it is slain, both are in ignorance. For the Self slays not nor is it slain."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna directly addresses the core of Arjuna's guilt: 'I am going to kill them, and they are going to die.' Krishna states that both the egoic feeling of being a 'slayer' (hantāraṃ) and the victimhood of being 'slain' (hatam) are illusions. The true Self (Ātman) is not an agent of physical action, nor is it subject to physical destruction. Therefore, both the arrogant murderer and the terrified victim are operating in ignorance (na vijānīto).
