Ch 2Verse 13
Adhyāya 2 Shloka 13

देहिनोऽस्मिन्यथा देहे कौमारं यौवनं जरा | तथा देहान्तरप्राप्तिर्धीरस्तत्र न मुह्यति || १३ ||

dehino 'smin yathā dehe kaumāraṃ yauvanaṃ jarā | tathā dehāntara-prāptir dhīras tatra na muhyati || 13 ||

"As the embodied soul continuously passes, in this body, from boyhood to youth to old age, the soul similarly passes into another body at death. A sober person is not bewildered by such a change."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna uses a simple, observable biological fact to prove a profound metaphysical truth. He points out that the physical body is already constantly dying and being reborn. The body of the 'boy' (kaumāraṃ) dies to give birth to the 'youth' (yauvanaṃ), which dies to give birth to 'old age' (jarā). Since the 'I' (the observer) survives these massive physical transformations during a single lifetime, it will logically survive the final transformation of acquiring a new body (dehāntara-prāptir).
