Ch 18Verse 9
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 9

कार्यमित्येव यत्कर्म नियतं क्रियतेऽर्जुन | सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा फलं चैव स त्यागः सात्त्विको मतः || ९ ||

kāryam ity eva yat karma niyataṁ kriyate 'rjuna | saṅgaṁ tyaktvā phalaṁ caiva sa tyāgaḥ sāttviko mataḥ || 9 ||

"O Arjuna, when one performs his prescribed duty only because it ought to be done, and renounces all material association and all attachment to the fruit, his renunciation is said to be in the mode of goodness."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Here is the gold standard. Krishna defines renunciation in the mode of goodness (sāttviko tyāgaḥ). It happens when a person vigorously performs their prescribed duty (niyataṁ kriyate) for one reason only: because it ought to be done (kāryam ity eva). While doing the work, they completely discard two things: psychological attachment to the action itself (saṅgaṁ tyaktvā) and the obsessive craving for the end result or fruit (phalaṁ caiva).
