Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is the ultimate, crowning verse of the entire Bhagavad Gita. Krishna issues His final, absolute command. He tells Arjuna to completely abandon and throw away (parityajya) all other varieties of duties, philosophies, and religious systems (sarva-dharmān). Instead, Arjuna must take full shelter and surrender exclusively unto Him alone (mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja). In return, Krishna takes full responsibility: 'I personally will liberate you (ahaṁ tvāṁ mokṣayiṣyāmi) from all your accumulated sins and karmic debts (sarva-pāpebhyo).' He ends with the ultimate comfort: 'Mā śucaḥ' (Do not fear / Do not worry).
