Adhyāya 18 Shloka 54

ब्रह्मभूतः प्रसन्नात्मा न शोचति न काङ्क्षति | समः सर्वेषु भूतेषु मद्भक्तिं लभते पराम् || ५४ ||

"One who is thus transcendentally situated at once realizes the Supreme Brahman and becomes fully joyful. He never laments or desires to have anything. He is equally disposed toward every living entity. In that state he attains pure devotional service unto Me."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

This is one of the most famous and crucial verses in the Gita, marking the transition from liberation to devotion. Once a person achieves the Brahman stage (brahma-bhūtaḥ), their core symptom is that they become 'prasannātmā' (fully joyful/blissful). In this state, they never lament over past losses (na śocati) and never hanker for future gains (na kāṅkṣati). Because their ego is gone, they see every single living entity with perfect equality (samaḥ sarveṣu bhūteṣu). It is only upon reaching this exalted platform of peaceful liberation that they attain the highest, pure devotional service unto Krishna (mad-bhaktiṁ labhate parām).
