Ch 18Verse 49
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 49

असक्तबुद्धिः सर्वत्र जितात्मा विगतस्पृहः | नैष्कर्म्यसिद्धिं परमां सन्न्यासेनाधिगच्छति || ४९ ||

asakta-buddhiḥ sarvatra jitātmā vigata-spṛhaḥ | naiṣkarmya-siddhiṁ paramāṁ sannyāsenādhigacchati || 49 ||

"One who is self-controlled and unattached and who disregards all material enjoyments can obtain, by practice of renunciation, the highest perfect stage of freedom from reaction."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna describes the ultimate result of perfect action. A person whose intelligence is unattached everywhere (asakta-buddhiḥ sarvatra), who has completely conquered their own mind and ego (jitātmā), and who is devoid of material hankerings (vigata-spṛhaḥ), attains the supreme perfection (paramāṁ siddhiṁ) of 'naiṣkarmya'. Naiṣkarmya means absolute freedom from karmic reactions, achieved through true inner renunciation (sannyāsena).
