Ch 18Verse 48
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 48

सहजं कर्म कौन्तेय सदोषमपि न त्यजेत् | सर्वारम्भा हि दोषेण धूमेनाग्निरिवावृताः || ४८ ||

sahajaṁ karma kaunteya sa-doṣam api na tyajet | sarvārambhā hi doṣeṇa dhūmenāgnir ivāvṛtāḥ || 48 ||

"Every endeavor is covered by some fault, just as fire is covered by smoke. Therefore one should not give up the work born of his nature, O son of Kuntī, even if such work is full of fault."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna concludes this section on natural duty with an undeniable law of physics. He tells Arjuna (Kaunteya) that one should never give up the work born of their inherent nature (sahajaṁ karma na tyajet), even if it appears to be full of faults or causing distress (sa-doṣam api). He uses a brilliant analogy: just as fire is always covered by smoke (dhūmenāgnir ivāvṛtāḥ), every single material endeavor (sarvārambhā) is covered by some fault or friction (doṣeṇa).
