Ch 18Verse 44
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 44

कृषिगौरक्ष्यवाणिज्यं वैश्यकर्म स्वभावजम् | परिचर्यात्मकं कर्म शूद्रस्यापि स्वभावजम् || ४४ ||

kṛṣi-gau-rakṣya-vāṇijyaṁ vaiśya-karma svabhāva-jam | paricaryātmakaṁ karma śūdrasyāpi svabhāva-jam || 44 ||

"Farming, cow protection and business are the natural work for the vaiśyas, and for the śūdras there is labor and service to others."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna defines the final two categories. The Vaiśyas (the producers/merchants) have a natural inclination (svabhāva-jam) for kṛṣi (agriculture), gau-rakṣya (cow protection/dairy farming), and vāṇijya (trade and commerce). The Śūdras (the laborers/artisans) have a natural disposition for paricaryātmakaṁ (work characterized by service, labor, and assisting the other three classes).
