Ch 18Verse 30
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 30

प्रवृत्तिं च निवृत्तिं च कार्याकार्ये भयाभये | बन्धं मोक्षं च या वेत्ति बुद्धिः सा पार्थ सात्त्विकी || ३० ||

pravṛttiṁ ca nivṛttiṁ ca kāryākārye bhayābhaye | bandhaṁ mokṣaṁ ca yā vetti buddhiḥ sā pārtha sāttvikī || 30 ||

"O son of Pṛthā, that understanding by which one knows what ought to be done and what ought not to be done, what is to be feared and what is not to be feared, what is binding and what is liberating, is in the mode of goodness."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Sattvic intelligence (sāttvikī buddhiḥ) is defined by perfect discrimination. It clearly knows four absolute binaries: 1) What actions should be done and what should be avoided (pravṛttiṁ ca nivṛttiṁ), 2) What is one's actual duty and what is not (kāryākārye), 3) What should be genuinely feared and what should not be feared (bhayābhaye), and 4) What binds the soul to illusion and what liberates it (bandhaṁ mokṣaṁ ca).
