"O winner of wealth, now please hear Me tell you in detail of the different kinds of understanding and determination, according to the three modes of material nature."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

Krishna continues His granular breakdown of human psychology. Having analyzed knowledge, action, and the worker, He now turns to two critical internal faculties: understanding/intelligence (buddher) and determination/fortitude (dhṛteś). He promises Arjuna (Dhananjaya) to explain their threefold division (tri-vidhaṁ) based on the modes of nature (guṇatas), completely and in full detail (aśeṣeṇa pṛthaktvena).
