Ch 18Verse 27
Adhyāya 18 Shloka 27

रागी कर्मफलप्रेप्सुर्लुब्धो हिंसात्मकोऽशुचिः | हर्षशोकान्वितः कर्ता राजसः परिकीर्तितः || २७ ||

rāgī karma-phala-prepsur lubdho hiṁsātmako 'śuciḥ | harṣa-śokānvitaḥ kartā rājasaḥ parikīrtitaḥ || 27 ||

"The worker who is attached to work and the fruits of work, desiring to enjoy those fruits, and who is greedy, always envious, impure, and moved by joy and sorrow, is said to be in the mode of passion."

Historical Context

The Direct Meaning

The worker in the mode of passion (rājasaḥ kartā) is highly volatile. They are deeply attached to the work (rāgī) and desperately crave the fruits (karma-phala-prepsur). Because of this craving, they become greedy (lubdho), prone to violence or stepping on others (hiṁsātmako), and impure in their methods (aśuciḥ). Consequently, they are violently tossed around by the emotional extremes of joy (harṣa) when they win, and agonizing sorrow (śoka) when they lose.
